Identify your professional values to determine important target negotiation terms as well as acceptable sacrifices. Establish a pay range based on your walk-away number and the market value you discovered through research. Negotiate Your Offer After necessary questions are answered, thoroughly evaluate your offer(s). Plan your strategy When possible, negotiate your salary in person or on the phone as opposed to using email. Secure a date and time, remembering it is acceptable to require a few days for review. Remember, the employer has to see the benefit to them in compromising just as much as you do. Develop your counter offer and have the conversation Depending on the employer and position level, you may counter in the form of a conversation or a letter. Document your counter offer, summarying the items you’d like to negotiate. Emphasize how you can add more financial benefit than you cost and concretely explain your worth with data, not your emotional connection to your previous salary or perceived worth. Also, avoid countering an offer more than once; decide exactly where you want to negotiate and make the first time count. Don’t be afraid of silence Be patient, but be willing to walk away from an offer that doesn’t meet your needs. Also be willing to compromise. Think about more than just salary Remember to negotiate other terms if this is of interest (e.g., benefits, paid time off, bonues, car allowances, and other perks). Sometimes a hiring manager or recruiter might be unwilling to budge about salary but compromise in other areas. Maintain positive relationships Regardless of your decision, don't burn bridges! Build positive relationships and always remain professional as you never know - you may have an opportunity to interview with this person, and even work with them, in the future. If you choose to reject an offer do so with appreciation and tact. Stay positive and appreciative, confirming you enjoyed meeting them and learning more about the opportunity. Thank them for their time and keep your reasoning simple such as it wasn’t the right opportunity for you at this time.
